Good Afternoon Burlington Family, Staff, and Students:

We are writing to everyone updated on the incident involving a private Instagram threat against the high school. The information was released late on the morning of December 14, 2021. Our first communication yesterday went only to high school and the Burlington Early Childhood Center (BECC) parents, teachers, and students. We have more information and want to extend our communication throughout the school district this afternoon.

Following our protocol and in partnership with the Burlington Police Department (BPD), an investigation was conducted. Through this investigation, the Burlington Police Department and the high school administration identified the person responsible. Once identified, BPD conducted a home check to determine if that person owned or had access to a weapon. They don't. In addition, a background check determined that this person, as well as immediate household members, did not own or have access to weapons. The Burlington Police Department will continue to review the facts of the incident and determine if any criminal charges are warranted.

Burlington High School has followed procedures to investigate and address behaviors that violate our core values and pose a threat to members of our school community. The school uses all of our disciplinary procedures, including, but not limited to, suspension and referral for a psychological evaluation by a medical professional.

Please know that we take all these cases seriously and investigate every situation that comes to our attention. Student and staff safety is our number one priority. We want to congratulate the members of the community who came forward.

At this time, we have transmitted all information that we may share while maintaining the privacy of a minor. We understand that these situations can create anxiety and fear especially when being shot at the last school in Michigan. Our goal is to be open and transparent while protecting all of our students and staff, including those with behavioral problems.

If you have any further questions or concerns please contact a member of the administration.

Thank you,
Eric Conti, Superintendent
Mark Sullivan, BHS Principal
