To the Burlington Public School Community:

In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.”

We are writing to all members of the Burlington Public School Community in reference to a threat made towards Burlington’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Ray Porch on the BCAT TV Facebook page related to the discussion of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the Burlington Selectboard Meeting last week. While it appears that this post was made under a fake account that has made comments on various posts on the BCAT Facebook page, we would like to make it clear that Burlington Public Schools will not tolerate threats towards staff members or students.

The details of this post were immediately given to Burlington Police so they could investigate the matter in the hope of finding the individual responsible for this threat. Our district remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring an environment where all members feel safe and valued. To quote the anti-racism resolution that our school committee adopted in July of 2020, “we, as school district leaders, can no longer remain silent to the issues of racism and hate that continue to plague our public and private institutions.”

Our community and school district need to be mindful that the students are watching how we treat each other.
