Racist Incident Impacting MSMS
Yesterday, we were made aware of a screen recording of a social media discussion where one of our students uses a racial slur. This recording has been circulating around the school and we recognize that this incident may directly and negatively impact students of color. We also acknowledge that seeing and hearing racially intolerant language negatively impacts all students. The use of dehumanizing language of this nature directly contradicts the final line of our Equity Statement where we strive to create a school community that focuses first and foremost on kindness and valuing the humanity of every child or individual. Without this focus, we cannot ensure schools where all students feel supported and valued and are therefore able to truly thrive. We are also sharing Principal Perchase’s letter to MSMS families here in our email to all district families. I would like to echo the following line: “Despite our sadness and disappointment that this situation occurred, we are hopeful that we can use this incident as an opportunity to educate our students about the history and impact of using racially intolerant language.”

We hope you will also have these critical conversations with your students at home.

This week’s reported COVID cases have totaled 11 as of this recording with seven student cases and four staff cases. That number is slightly down from the 14 cases reported last week. We will continue to update these numbers weekly.

Elementary Enrollment
We are scheduling kindergarten registration at all of the elementary schools for next school year. Please make sure you participate if you have a child that you plan on sending to kindergarten. Our age requirement is your child’s 5th birthday has to be on or prior to August 31st.

We may need to re-balance some of our elementary zones to move some students from Fox Hill to another elementary school. Accurate, incoming kindergarten numbers will help with these decisions.

Last Day of School
We will be announcing the official last day of school in the next few weeks. One factor that is still unknown is the final number of staff who will be absent observing Good Friday on April 15th. If we do not have enough staff to safely run schools, then we will cancel school for Friday and add the day to the end of the current calendar. No decision has been made. We will notify families at the start of April.

BHS Accolades
Along with a successful winter athletic season, we want to recognize that the BHS DECA program will be bringing 25 students (more than double what we ever have before) with us to the International Competition in late April. Congratulations to these students for their hard work and to Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Trouve for all of their efforts coaching the DECA Program.

Congratulations to BHS Senior Bella Gill who advanced all the way to the Poetry Out Loud State Finals last weekend!
