Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)

Burlington Public Schools acknowledges that during the administration of the 2025 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), there were areas for improvement, particularly in the opt-out process and delivery of the proctor script. We recognize the importance of clear communication with families regarding student participation in surveys of this nature.

To address these concerns, we are taking the following steps:

  • Providing relevant background and process information to the Wellness Committee in response to public inquiries
  • Engaging an independent consultant to review the 2025 survey’s administration
  • Implementing the consultant’s recommendations to improve future practices and ensure consistent implementation

We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and the well-being of all students, and we value our continued collaboration with families and the broader community.

PURPOSE & IMPACT OF THE YRBS

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey is a key tool for understanding student health and wellness needs. Data collected through the survey helps inform decision making at both Marshall Simonds Middle School (MSMS) and Burlington High School (BHS), guiding curriculum design, staffing, student services, and community partnerships.

How YRBS Data Supports Burlington Students:

  • Identifies student wellness trends and areas for support
  • Informs program and staffing decisions
  • Strengthens partnerships with community organizations (e.g., Burlington Police, and Burlington Youth and Family Services)
  • Highlights student groups who may feel less connected or safe at school

PROGRAMS & INITIATIVES INFORMED BY THE YRBS RESULTS

  • The BRIDGE Program: Dedicated space for emotional and social support at MSMS and BHS
  • BSmart Presentations: Focus on leadership, healthy decision-making, and wellness
  • Expanded Counseling Services: Additional school adjustment counselors for mental health support
  • Mentoring Programs: Student-to-student mentoring that fosters positive peer relationships
  • Parent/Guardian Education Nights: Topics include vaping, online safety, and substance use prevention
  • Health Curriculum Enhancements: Lessons on self-esteem, body image, sleep, and nutrition
  • Scheduling Changes: Implementation of later start times and BHS Flex Block for personalized support and wellness
